Saturday Fossil Trip Directions to Fossil Site from Carolina Beach
The site will be open from 10 to 2. All participants will be responsible for their own transportation, snacks,
drinks.. Driving time from Carolina Beach is an hour and a half.
15 miles From Carolina Beach take US 421 into Wilmington. Turn left at Wooster St. Continue to follow
US 421 across the Cape Fear River bridge
40 miles Follow US-74 W/US-76 W to State Rd 1001/Hallsboro Rd interchange in
Columbus County. Take exit 248 from US-74 W/US-76 W
Turn left on State Rd 1001 (Hallsboro Rd)
10 miles Turn left at stop sign to continue on SR 1001 (Hallsboro Rd.)
1 mile continue past Cornerstone FWB Church on right
1 mile Cross canal (ditch). Make immediate right turn onto dirt path. Follow canal to borrow pits.
Alternative route, about 10 minutes longer, take US 17 south, turn north at Shallotte onto NC 130, go 20 1/5 miles, take Hallsboro Rd as the right fork just past the MasterMart, and it’s on the left in a mile and a half. The challenge is that the final left turn is a gravel farm lane just like lots of others. A person or Shell Club sign will be there.
For bird watchers there’s a good chance of Mississippi and Swallow-tailed Kites being around the fields. You may want to bring binoculars.
The MasterMart is the closest spot for emergency bathroom, snack, etc. needs. The owners of the MasterMart also own an adjacent quarry, now rather low on non-overgrown area, but have also been collector-friendly.
