FRIDAY NIGHT SPEAKER - Derek Detweiler, receipient of a North Carolina Shell Club scholarship, will be the speaker. Derek is currently finishing his Master's Degree in Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. His primary research focuses on the impact of altered estuaries on the health and diet of eastern oysters. Originally from Bethlehem, PA, Derek moved to Wilmington in August 2012 to pursue Bachelor's Degrees in Marine Biology and Oceanography from UNCW. This fall, Derek is excited to continue his education and research endeavors at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science where he recently accepted an offer to pursue a PhD. In the future, Derek hopes to continue exploring how humans impact coastal environments and how we can shift towards sustainable ways of living while preserving our natural resources. In his free time, Derek loves the outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and running.
